When most people imagine family photos, they picture everyone smiling nicely at the camera, standing perfectly still, and somehow convincing the kids to cooperate for an entire hour.
As any parent—or grandparent—knows, that’s rarely how real life works.
And honestly?
I’m glad.
Some of the most meaningful photographs I’ve ever created started with a little chaos.

This recent grandparent session in my Fort Collins studio was the perfect example.
Three energetic grandchildren.
One incredibly fun grandma.
A whole lot of movement.
And photographs that perfectly capture what this season of life actually feels like.

For many families, grandparents are right in the thick of it.
They’re picking kids up from school, attending dance recitals, helping with homework, hosting summer adventures, and saying “yes” to things Mom and Dad would probably say “absolutely not” to.
They’re creating memories in the ordinary moments.
That’s what made this session so special.
These photographs aren’t just about documenting a grandmother and her grandchildren. They’re about celebrating a relationship that is actively shaping childhood right now. The laughter, the playfulness, the trust, the fun—it’s all part of a story that’s still being written.

Years from now, these images won’t just show what everyone looked like.
They’ll remind this family what it felt like to be together.
The way Grandma carried her granddaughter on her shoulders.
The way the kids piled on top of her.
The laughter.
The energy.
The connection.
Those are the moments that become family treasures.

The kids arrived with plenty of energy.
First we captured some individual portraits.

Next, we were running, playing, climbing, laughing, and generally embracing the beautiful unpredictability that comes with photographing children.
There was absolutely no expectation that anyone would sit quietly and smile on command.
Instead, we leaned into what made this family unique.
The children showed off their personalities and came up with ideas for photographs.
Grandma jumped right into the fun.
And little by little, the photographs started creating themselves.
One of my favorite images from the session shows Grandma carrying her granddaughter on her shoulders, both of them looking directly at the camera.

It’s simple.
It’s joyful.
And it perfectly captures the relationship they share.
One of my favorite moments happened when everyone was simply playing together.
The kids were running around the studio.

Grandma asked if we could photograph “Flip Machine”, a game they regularly play where she launches one child after another onto their couch at home.
One grandchild launched into a flying leap.
Another wandered through the middle of the scene.

Nobody was posed.
Nobody was looking at the camera.
And yet, the photograph tells the story of this family better than any traditional portrait ever could.
Because real connection isn’t perfectly arranged.
It’s lived.
The truth is, some of the strongest photographs aren’t the ones where everyone is standing perfectly still.
They’re the ones that make you remember exactly what it felt like to be there.
One thing I always tell families is that children don’t need to perform for the camera.
They don’t need to sit still.
They don’t need to be “good.”
Some of the strongest images from this session happened when the children were simply being themselves.

One granddaughter decided she wanted to do handstands.
So we photographed handstands and her grandma joined in.
The result?
A photograph filled with personality, confidence, joy, and childhood wonder.

Exactly the kinds of things parents and grandparents hope to remember.
When children are given room to be themselves, that’s when the magic happens.
Not because everything is perfectly behaved.
But because it’s real.
A lot of people assume studio photography means formal portraits and forced smiles.
My Fort Collins studio is designed to feel relaxed and comfortable, giving families room to interact naturally while still creating clean, timeless images.
That means we can create beautiful portraits of everyone together while also making space for movement, play, and genuine connection.
The result is a gallery that feels both polished and real.
A gallery that captures not only what your family looks like, but who they are.

Whether you’re celebrating a special milestone, gathering multiple generations together, or simply wanting photographs that document this season of life, grandparent sessions are some of the most meaningful portraits you’ll ever invest in.
Because one day these photographs become more than images.

They become proof of relationships.
Proof of laughter.
Proof of love.
And proof of the beautiful role grandparents play in the lives of the people who love them most.
If you’re considering grandparent photos in Fort Collins, I’d love to help you create something that feels authentic to your family—chaos and all.
