When you imagine a maternity photoshoot, you might picture a glowing mama-to-be in a flowing dress, cradling her belly in a golden field at sunset. Beautiful? Absolutely. But sometimes, we take that golden-hour magic and give it a twist—like ending the evening knee-deep (okay, waist-deep) in a sparkling Colorado lake. This Summer Maternity Session on the Lake was one for the books, and as a Fort Collins maternity photographer, I can honestly say it had the perfect mix of romance, laughter, and a little splash of adventure.

Summer maternity sessions by the water have a certain effortless glow to them. There’s something about the mix of sunshine, rippling water, and barefoot freedom that makes everyone loosen up a little.
The lake becomes more than just a pretty backdrop—it’s a playground. The colors pop differently. The blues are richer, the greens softer, and when the light hits just right, it wraps around you like the best warm hug.
For expectant parents, there’s also something symbolic about being near water—it’s calming, nurturing, and full of life. And on a summer evening, it’s not just a location, it’s an experience.

This couple came to me wanting something different. They wanted their maternity photos to feel like them—adventurous, playful, and a little wild. We talked about their love for the outdoors and the fact that they spend half their summer kayaking or swimming in Colorado’s lakes.
So, naturally, the plan was simple: sunset at the lake, a few photos on the shore, and then… why not end the evening in the water?
They showed up with easy smiles, ready to laugh, ready to embrace the moment. From the first shot on the dock to the final splash in the lake, the entire evening felt like one long exhale.

When it comes to creating a session like this, it’s not just about the location—it’s about preparation and connection. As a Denver maternity & newborn photographer, I’ve learned that the best photos come from creating an environment where my clients feel comfortable, beautiful, and completely themselves.
For this shoot, that meant scouting the perfect lake with easy access for barefoot wading, timing the session to catch that dreamy golden light, and making sure the couple felt free to just be. We chatted, joked, and let the session unfold naturally—because the magic happens when you’re not forcing the moment.

Wardrobe matters—especially when water is involved. For her, we chose a long, flowy dress that would catch the breeze and move beautifully both on land and in the water. Think light fabrics in soft colors that complement the natural surroundings.
For him, lightweight linen pants and a rolled-sleeve shirt felt effortless and classic. Bare feet were a must.
And yes, we planned for the fact that they’d get wet. This meant bringing a change of clothes, a couple of towels, and an attitude that embraced a little mess. Because a damp dress clinging to a baby bump? Gorgeous.

Timing is everything when you’re shooting at a lake in summer. Harsh midday light is a no-go—it can be blinding, unflattering, and way too hot.
Instead, we planned this session for golden hour, when the sun dips low and paints everything in warm, honeyed tones. The reflections on the water become pure magic, and the air feels softer somehow.
Plus, later in the day usually means fewer crowds, which means more privacy for wading into the water without an audience.

Some of my favorite images from the entire evening came in those last 15 minutes, when the couple walked hand-in-hand into the lake.
The light was dreamy, the air warm, and they were completely relaxed after an hour of laughing and snuggling. She hiked up her dress, he rolled his pants a little higher (but not high enough—cue the giggles), and they splashed, swayed, and kissed like nobody was watching.
There’s something freeing about saying, “Let’s just get in.” It strips away any remaining stiffness and makes room for pure, joyful connection. And those moments? They’re the ones you’ll treasure forever.

A Summer Maternity Session on the Lake isn’t just about pretty photos—it’s about creating a memory. Years from now, when this little one is running around barefoot on those same shores, these images will be a reminder of the love and anticipation that started it all.
As a Denver maternity & newborn photographer, I believe in making sessions feel like an experience, not just a photoshoot. Whether we’re barefoot in the sand, toes in the water, or wrapped up in a blanket by the shore, my goal is always to capture the real, unscripted magic of your story.

If a summer evening on the lake sounds like your kind of maternity session, I’d love to make it happen for you. Let’s create something unforgettable—photos that feel like you, filled with love, laughter, and maybe a little water.
