I’m so excited to share that I was recently interviewed and featured on Untethered, a photography publication and community that truly honors the heart of family photography and the artists behind it.
Founded by Hannah Mann of Unbasic Creatives, Untethered exists to uplift, connect, and empower photographers — especially women and working mothers — through authentic education, community, and storytelling. It’s a social-media-free space (hallelujah!) where real conversations happen, the noise is stripped away, and we’re reminded why this work is sacred.
In Hannah’s own words, family photography is one of the most important art forms on the planet — and I couldn’t agree more. We document the moments that define a life: new beginnings, quiet connections, laughter, heartbreak, joy. Through our work, we create legacy.
What sets Untethered apart is how deeply it values both the art and the artist. The community is filled with photographers sharing their stories, struggles, and triumphs — a reminder that we’re not alone, and that the work we do matters.
In my feature, I opened up about how I started my photography journey. I’m a mom to a grown son, a former bartender, an animal lover, and an avid gardener. My work is rooted in connection — especially between mothers and their children — and my passion lies in creating portraits that feel timeless, emotional, and real.
I shared about how I first fell in love with photography because I couldn’t draw (still can’t!) and needed an artistic outlet. I talked about the inspiration I pull from cinema and classical art — how I break down lighting in a movie scene or study the tones in an old painting — and how that all finds its way into my work today.
I also got vulnerable about the early mistakes I made in business: undercharging, overworking, and saying yes to everything (even when it didn’t align). Like many photographers, I burned out. But I came back stronger, with intention. I took time to build the business I wanted, and I now run a full-service portrait studio in Fort Collins, focusing on family, motherhood, and creative headshots.
One of my proudest moments has been becoming a Click Pro — something I dreamed about for years but never thought I was “good enough” for. So to be featured by Untethered, a platform that shares those same values of growth, creativity, and resilience, felt incredibly full-circle.
If you’re curious, you can read the full feature here. And if you’re a photographer feeling a little lost, a little unseen, or just craving real connection — please check out Untethered. It’s the kind of place that reminds you who you are and why you started.
Hannah, thank you for creating a space where photographers can be both artists and humans. I’m so grateful to be part of a community that sees the beauty in what we do — and in who we are.
