How to Prepare Kids for Santa Photos (Without Losing Your Holiday Cheer)

Santa Minis Fort Collins

You’ve pictured it: your little one beaming on Santa’s knee, eyes full of wonder. Then reality whispers, what if they scream the whole time? If you’re wondering how to prepare kids for Santa photos, take a deep breath. A little prep goes a long way, and even the wobbly moments can turn into your favorite frames.

Talk About Santa Before the Big Day

Kids feel braver when they know what’s coming. In the days before your session, read a Santa book together, point him out in holiday movies, and chat about what he might ask. (“What do you think you’ll tell Santa you’d like for Christmas?”)

Here’s a fun detail to share with your kids: Santa Greg carries a very special Nice List, and it lights up when kids find out they’re on it. A little mystery builds excitement instead of nerves.

How to Prepare Kids for Santa Photos: Timing Is Everything

The best Santa photos happen when kids are rested and fed. A few tips:

Protect nap time. If you have a choice of time slots, pick one that won’t bump into a nap.
Snack before you arrive. A happy tummy equals a happy face. (Skip anything that stains. You’ll thank me.)
Leave a little buffer. Rushing in the door makes everyone tense, kids included.

Tips for Shy or Nervous Kiddos

Some kids run straight to Santa. Others need a minute, and that’s completely okay. Stay close and calm; your little one takes cues from you. Let them watch Santa from your lap first, or sit beside him together. A parent-and-Santa photo can be just as magical as a solo one.

Most importantly, don’t force it. A gentle, pressure-free approach gives kids room to warm up in their own time.

What If They Cry?

Tears happen, and that’s okay. Santa Greg will never force a child who isn’t ready. If your little one is upset, he’ll keep things gentle and let them take it at their own pace, whether that means watching from your lap, sitting beside him with you, or simply giving a wave from a safe distance.

And if a few sniffles sneak into the photos anyway? Those often become the sweetest, most laughed-about images in the family album. So let go of perfect and trust the moment.

Getting Your Outfits Ready

Comfortable kids are happier kids. Choose outfits they can move and sit in, and do a test run before session day so there are no scratchy-tag surprises. Need ideas? My [Santa mini session outfit guide] has you covered.
